Types of Rose Wines

Posted on July 21, 2014 By Noor Lifestyle No Comments on Types of Rose Wines
More and more wine makers want to try making rose wine, and this seems to become quite popular nowadays. Earlier on, this type was hardly looked upon as something that great and people would only drink it during summer. You can make a Rose in three different ways: as a blanc de noir, as a saignee or by mixing red with white wine.

Saignee process involves bleeding off a portion of red wine after hours or days of contact with the grape skin. Because the juice and the grape skin are in contact for only a short period of time, the liquid comes out pink and not red. Winemakers who want to obtain certain color increase or decrease the ratio of juice to grape skin in the vat. This explains why different Rose have different colors.

Rose wine can yield a variety of flavor and aroma, including raspberry, strawberry, apricots, and watermelon. Take this into consideration when preparing a meal to pair with it. As much as possible, you would want to use ingredients that would somehow compliment the taste and aroma of your rose wine produces.

The red-skinned grapes are smashed and the skins are left in the juice for a short period of time. Then the grapes are pressed, and the skins are thrown away rather than being left in the juice through fermentation. The skin has a lot of the strongly flavored tannin and other compounds, and makes it have a taste similar to that of white wine. The longer the skins are left in the juice, the darker the color of the wine.

Sometimes, rose wine is made into sparkling Brut that’s medium-bodied with a hint of dryness. It can be mixed with another variety that balances its crispness with a softer smoother flavor. As expected, the profile of the sparkling version also consists of fruity flavors, floral scents, and a long palate.

Rose wines are specially fermented. They are not a mixture of ready-made wines, as what many people think. This beverage is produced from red grapes in which the juices are allowed to mingle with their skins for a limited period of time. Once the winemaker sees his desired color, he removes the juice from the tank by draining it to barrels for fermentation.

With rose, what happens is the red grapes are used. The red grapes are juiced and passed forward to ferment. The red grape skins will also be used, but they will only stay in the mixture for a very short time, such as a couple hours. The wines absorb only a little of the tannins, giving it more colour than a regular white wine but less than a full bodied red.

Rose wines are made by using dark grapes in the fermentation process. However, unlike red wine, the grapes have their skins removed before fermentation. Rose has a pink glow and partial amounts of tannin. In addition to having a lighter color than red wine, rose also has a lower alcohol content than its darker counterpart.
