Menstrual Cycle

Menstruation is the shedding of the uterine lining. It is normal to the reproductive system of women and happens on a regular basis. Normal menstruation happens around 3 to 7 days. During the monthly menstrual cycle, female sex hormones prepare the uterus to support a pregnancy.

The majority of women may never encounter any problem with their menstrual cycle whilst training for their sport. But with the escalating levels of more competition and pressure to succeed especially with the monetary rewards we are seeing more and more women suffering from “abnormal periods” or “dysfunctional cycles”.

When amenorrhea occurs it’s the lack of menstrual cycle for more than three months – there is a cause for concern. Indeed, the causes of a long absence of menstrual cycle could be more serious and have consequences on your fertility. The Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) (which affects 5% to 10% of women), endometriosis and osteoporosis are often the source of these problems.

A woman is generally not fertile from around the 4th day after ovulation until the next period. Hope that gives you a better picture of the fertile times of the menstrual cycle.Did you know that a woman can have more than one mature egg in a menstrual cycle? If she is lucky to have 2 eggs that have matured, the second will be released within 24 hours of the first.

Many women have not considered using herbs – because they are not sure they work. The truth is, they often do work; not every herbs will work 100% of the time and you will need to find what works for you.
