To become an art history teacher, first of all you will have to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Fine Arts or Education, concentrating in art or history. However, if you want to teach art-history at the college level, a Bachelor’s degree will not suffice. For college level, an M.A. or a PhD in art-history will be necessary. Also, you will have to pass the teaching competency exams and basic skills tests required by your state, so your can earn a teaching certificate. The requirements may vary from one state to another, but generally teaching licenses will be granted only to those who have successfully completed a Bachelor’s program at an accredited college.

An Art degree is usually a four-year degree program, but there are also new five-year integrated bachelor-masters in Fine Arts available nowadays. Though five-year accelerated programs do not generally entail a teacher license, these programs include student teaching workshops and education courses which can patch a teaching career. Plus some states require their teachers to get a Master’s degree within the few years of their teaching career, and having one right always saves time, money and worry. The last step before getting an official teaching license is always an assessment test from the state education board.

If that works out then the next thing you should do is see what kind of help they will give you after you graduate. Do they have a department or counselor in this potential art school that will help you find a job after you graduate with your degree? They just might charge for this additional service so be sure to find out what the school’s rates are for this job placement service.

Quite Frequently the student makes the decision that drawing and painting is just too hard and gives up. The student will incorrectly find the fault with themselves, often with the self generated concept that they do not posses enough natural artistic talent.

Even if the recession is not over and marketing and advertising agencies are not really hiring, that does not mean you can’t put your creative talents to work as an art teacher. There are plenty of art students at the community college level, and there are plenty of private art schools, and private schools that need artistic enabled teachers.
